EU Nuclear Decommissioning Knowledge Management

The JRC coordinates the structuring and dissemination of knowledge gained in the ongoing nuclear decommissioning projects in Europe

The JRC is decommissioning nuclear research facilities at four sites - Karlsruhe, Geel, Petten, and Ispra - under the Nuclear Decommissioning & Waste Management Programme. The programme, launched in 1999, will span four decades.

The European Parliament and the Council have promoted a series of initiatives to share the knowledge gained from ongoing nuclear decommissioning programmes (NDAP) across Europe. The goal is to leverage this expertise to support future decommissioning projects. To achieve this, the European Parliament and the Council have entrusted the JRC with leading the Nuclear Decommissioning Knowledge Management (NDKM) Initiative.

Since 2021 the JRC manages the knowledge gained in the EU-funded or co-funded decommissioning programmes through initiatives like: development of knowledge products, promoting European Learning Initiatives on Nuclear Decommissioning and Environmental Remediation (ELINDER) and organizing the Decommissioning summer school.

NDKM activities

Knowledge products developed by the EU nuclear decommissioning operators under the NDKM initiative. A knowledge product is a tangible output of prepared knowledge that enables action of selected users. This web section presents the latest version of the currently available knowledge products.

The European Learning Initiatives for Nuclear Decommissioning and Environmental Remediation (ELINDER) is a training programme in nuclear decommissioning.. It aims to raise the interest of students and professionals in the important and emerging field of decommissioning and environmental remediation and to stimulate relevant career perspectives, by offering a set of learning opportunities that combine theory and practice.

A 5-day multidisciplinary training on nuclear decommissioning and waste management for post-graduate students. The Summer school is organised within the frame of the ELINDER and taking place in person in the premises of the Joint Research Center of the European Commission (JRC) in Ispra, Italy.
