Favourable winter crops outlook in Türkiye

The April edition of the JRC MARS Bulletin - Global outlook for Türkiye – describes a favourable outlook for winter crops in Türkiye.

Weather conditions in Türkiye have been favourable to winter crop growth.  Yield forecasts for winter crops are well above the 5-year average but below last year’s level. Overall, crops are in good condition, notably in south-eastern regions.

Highlights

  • In Anatolian regions, crop growth was favoured by the very warm winter, which accelerated early crop development. From February, precipitation were modest even though sufficient to maintain fair winter crop growth.
  • In eastern regions (e.g. Kırıkkale), winter crops are progressing well with favourable soil moisture conditions.  
  • In south-eastern regions (Gaziantep, Şanlıurfa, Mardin), the winter warm anomalies and a slight precipitation surplus resulted favourable to crop emergence and biomass accumulation. Crops are now in optimal conditions and close to flowering.
  • In northern regions, along the Black Sea coast, winter crops are still in early development stages with the exception of Tekirdağ region, where winter crops entered the flowering stage in April.

The fAPAR anomaly map shows the differences between the fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation cumulated (1 March to 10 April 2024 VS the medium-term average (2014 – 2023) for the same period). Positive anomalies (shown in green) reflect above-average biomass accumulation and/or early crop development, while negative anomalies (shown in red) reflect below-average biomass accumulation and/or late crop development.
