Description

Determination of Deoxynivalenol, Aflatoxin B1, Fumonisin B1&B2, T-2 & HT-2 toxins, Zearalenone and Ochratoxin A in feed materials and compound feed

The European Commission Joint Research Centre Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements (JRC-IRMM), European Union Reference Laboratory for Mycotoxins (EURL Mycotoxins) organises a collaborative method validation study (MVS) for the determination of Deoxynivalenol, Aflatoxin B1, Fumonisin B1&B2, T-2 & HT-2 toxins, Zearalenone and Ochratoxin A in feed materials and compound feed.

The method is a straightforward, adopting a 'dilute-and-shoot' approach making use of stable isotope standards and is based on liquid chromatography – tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) quantitative analysis.

Design of the study

The study involves two steps:

  1. A pre-trial in which participants receive a sample contaminated at levels close to required LOQs (for most critical ones in terms of sensitivity: Afla B1, T-2 & HT-2 toxins and OTA. The aim of this exercise is to allow potential participants to tune their LC-MS instrument for sufficient signal yield at the lower end of the measurement range.
  2. The method validation study. This involves the analysis of 17 compound feed samples (13 samples containing various level and mycotoxin combinations and 4 samples to be spiked). The participants will be notified about the dispatch at least two weeks in advance and on the day of dispatch. Method description will be made available to the MVS participants.

All calibrants needed for the study will be provided by organisers.

The participants had 8 weeks from the dispatch date to report back the results.

The MVS was open to all interested laboratories, e.g. NRLs, official food control laboratories, private food control laboratories, academia, and laboratories from industry.
