The 4th edition of the Sino-EU workshop was organised by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) in collaboration with the Chinese Vehicle Emission Control Centre (VECC) from 3-5 March 2021.

The workshop took place as virtual live event over three days, with more than 20 presentations and speeches related to new emissions standards and regulations for motor vehicles, and more than 300 registered participants from all over the globe.

The opening session was chaired by JRC Director Piotr SZYMANSKI and featured invited speeches from JRC Director General Stephen QUEST and Ms LI Pen, Director General of the Department of Atmospheric Environment of the Chinese Ministry of Ecology and Environment.

The event addressed actual and very sensitive themes, central to the ongoing global fight against climate change and air pollution. We learned about important changes taking place in China and EU on standards and regulations for pollutants and CO2 emission control, and their impact on air quality.

In particular, we discussed for the first time together about the upcoming Euro 7 and China 7 standards for passenger cars, finding a very good level of alignment on the way forward. We then exchanged on heavy-duty vehicles and non-road mobile machinery regulation in China and EU, and on emission modelling and impact assessment on air quality. Before concluding the event, this last day was entirely dedicated to vehicular CO2 emissions, a topic of upmost importance to both EU and China alike.

Thanks to the exchanges we have now gained a better understanding about the common challenges ahead and how the close collaboration developed by VECC and JRC could enhance progress in the implementation and harmonisation of the new motor vehicle standards.
