High yield expectations for spring cereals in Kazakhstan

The production forecast for wheat and barley is more than 30% above the 5-year average and more than 50% above last year’s level, according to the October edition of the JRC MARS Bulletin on Kazakhstan.      

Wet conditions around harvesting raised some concerns, but overall progress has been adequate.

Spring cereals benefitted from mild temperatures and well-distributed above-average rainfall 

The main spring cereal-producing regions of North Kazakhstan enjoyed excellent water supply during the summer. Moderate temperatures supported adequate yield formation during the flowering and grain-filling periods. Yield expectations are above the 5-year average in all oblasts. At the country level, the yield expectations for spring cereals are among the best of the past 15 years. Frequent rainfall locally hampered the harvest until early September, when progress improved. Harvesting is still ongoing in several regions. No significant deterioration of grain quality is expected so far. 

The yield forecast for winter cereals is also positive 

In South Kazakhstan, the country’s main winter-wheat-producing region, near-average to above-average precipitation mitigated the negative effects of hot temperatures. In the northern half of the country, abundant rainfall supported good canopy expansion, biomass accumulation and yield formation. 

Fair yield outlook for grain maize 

Grain maize is mainly cultivated under irrigated conditions in South Kazakhstan. The yield forecast is slightly above the 5-year average.
