Metrology for Waste Characterization and Clearance (ELINDER Course S7)

The training provides specific knowledge and skills in nuclear waste characterization and clearance, as required for nuclear decommissioning activities.

The training provides specific knowledge and skills in nuclear waste characterization and clearance, as required for nuclear decommissioning activities. The course includes hands-on exercises in analytical techniques using the most common laboratory equipment and devices. It is open to young professional in nuclear decommissioning and waste management.

The course is delivered within the  European Nuclear Decommissioning Training Programme (ELINDER). The course objective is to provide specific knowledge and skills required to perform some of the activities linked to nuclear decommissioning. It is focused on the waste characterization and waste and clearance of nuclear waste and materials.

Scope:

Experts from the Joint Research Centre will explain the current practices and the development in this field:

  • Radiological measurement principles
  • Destructive assessment techniques
  • Non-destructive assessment techniques
  • Measurement validation and statistics
  • New developments in waste characterisation
  • Waste and material clearance approaches
  • Metrology networks

Moreover, practical exercises are performed using the most common laboratory equipment and analytical techniques.

The participants may take an optional final test to obtain a course certificate.
