A Pedagogical Tool to Enhance 3Rs education

Dive into in the Future of Science: the ECVAM Virtual Lab
Embark on a 20-minute virtual adventure, designed for students aged 14-18 but equally engaging for older leaners. Step into the ECVAM virtual lab and join a friendly professor on a journey to explore a new alternative to animal testing method. As a virtual researcher, you will conduct experiments, just like in a real laboratory, to evaluate the reproducibility of a test method. Through this interactive journey, you will learn about laboratory work and alternatives to animal testing methods, while having fun.
Interactive lab Adventures:
- Experimentation: Expand your scientific knowledge by unleashing your inner scientist and explore about alternatives to animal testing methods
- Master lab skills: Gain hands-on experience with core laboratory techniques like cell culture, microscopy, automation, and chemical assessment
- Method Evaluation: Become a critical thinker while you analyse experimental results and decide whether a method worked or not
A Fun and Engaging Way to Learn
Designed with young people in mind, and with their help too, this ECVAM Virtual Lab experience uses engaging visuals and storytelling to make learning fun and interactive. It is the perfect way to explore the future of science from the comfort of your school/home. Guided by a virtual professor, you will evaluate the reproducibility of an animal-free method and gain valuable hands-on training and learning opportunities.
Shaping the future of Science Education
The ECVAM Virtual Lab is a powerful tool that has the potential to make a significant contribution to science education by providing students with an engaging and immersive way to learn about alternatives to animal testing. By offering a unique opportunity to explore cutting-edge, animal-free research methods, this virtual laboratory empowers the next generation of scientists to embrace the 3Rs (Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement) principles.
Choose your game mode
The ECVAM Virtual lab application is available in two versions: the Virtual Reality (VR) version compatible with Meta Quest 2 headsets and the Desktop version designed to run on a Windows computer.
Data protection
The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) does not collect any personal information via the ECVAM Virtual Lab app, including names, metadata, and IP addresses, neither when the application is downloaded from the above links nor when in use through the platform Meta Quest.
