Quality of Life

The Survey Methods and Analysis Centre (SMAC) supports the Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy in analysing regular surveys on quality of life in cities.

A series of surveys on quality of life in cities gathering the experiences and opinions of city dwellers across Europe are conducted by the Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy since 2007. The SMAC has contributed to reports and data analysis of the last two waves.

Questions in the surveys cover many aspects of life in cities: cleanliness and safety, satisfaction with air quality and public transport, and the ease of finding a job or an affordable housing, among others.

The latest wave covers 83 cities across Europe for a total of more than 70 000 interviews. The results are summarized in the reports available below, which provide a unique insight into city life. The data is available from Eurostat website.

Additional information

A dedicated page of the Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy provides additional information, including downloadable maps and charts for all questions covered by the survey, the underlying data at the city level and in the form of anonymized microdata, the full questionnaire and the accompanying methodological reports.

Previous reports are available on the European Commission's Urban Audit website.
