Knowledge sharing on the 'Three Rs'

Effective knowledge sharing is fundamental to achieving Three-Rs impact in every field where animals are used for scientific purposes.

Finding information on alternative methods

Sharing knowledge through networking activities and community initiatives  are critical to implementing the 'Three Rs' (replacement, reduction and refinement of animal experiments) in animal-based research and to improving scientific practices.

Key tools and databases

To support the adoption of the Three Rs, the Joint Research Centre (JRC) has developed some key tools and databases on alternative methods for identifying and implementing non-animal approaches.

Biomedical models Hub

The largest public database of scientific articles making use of human biology-based models used in biomedical research.

Biomedical models Hub (BimmoH)

Tracking System for Alternative methods towards Regulatory acceptance (TSAR)

TSAR provides an overview of alternative methods that have been proposed or have undergone validation on the path to regulatory acceptance.

EURL ECVAM Tracking System on Alternative Methods (TSAR)

EURL ECVAM dataset on alternative methods to animal experimentation (DB-ALM)

A database covering alternative methods at all stages of development. Contains method descriptions and protocols, but many other datasets are also available.

EURL ECVAM Database Service on Alternative Methods to Animal Experimentation (DB-ALM)

ALURES statistical database

How many animals are still used for scientific purposes?  The ALURES database on the use of animals for scientific purposes under Directive 2010/63/EU provides a unique level of transparency on animal-based research and testing. Numbers are collected across all EU Member States and Norway on a yearly basis.

Educational resources

Education and training are fundamental to boosting the uptake of alternative methods and the application of the Three Rs in science. EURL ECVAM is engaged in various initiatives to expand its educational impact by producing a set of freely available teaching resources.

Knowledge networks

EURL ECVAM enhances knowledge sharing by collaborating with many different partners through a number of key advisory and consultation bodies.

EURL ECVAM Scientific Advisory Committee (ESAC)

The role of the ESAC is to independently assess the scientific quality of test method validation studies that EURL ECVAM conducts or supports. It also independently assesses the scientific quality of any studies that a stakeholder may have submitted for assessment.

EURL ECVAM Network for Preliminary Assessment of Regulatory Relevance (PARERE)

PARERE is a network of national and European-level regulators that provides upstream input and preliminary views on potential regulatory relevance of methods submitted to EURL ECVAM for validation.

PARERE

International Cooperation on Alternative Test Methods (ICATM)

ICATM is an international cooperation between a number of partners from governmental organisations in the EU, US, Japan, Canada, South Korea, UK and Brazil. ICATM partners work together to promote enhanced international cooperation and coordination on the scientific development, validation and regulatory use of alternative approaches.

European 3Rs Centres

Europe hosts several 3Rs centres. These centres focus on a variety of innovative ways for achieving impact in the Three Rs – the replacement, reduction and refinement of the use of animals used for scientific purposes.
