As Commissioner for Startups, Research and Innovation, Ekaterina Zaharieva’s task is to drive the EU’s ambition to put research and innovation, science and technology at the centre of our economy.

Since 2025, Bernard Magenhann has been the Director-General of the JRC. He is in charge of 50 large-scale research infrastructures located in 6 sites and 5 Member States with almost 3000 staff.

Board of Governors

The JRC Board of Governors assists and advises the Director-General and the European Commission on

  • the strategic role of the JRC
  • its scientific, technical and financial management

Board members also represent the interests of the JRC in their respective countries.

They are nominated by the Commission upon designation by the country's authorities.

The Board consists of

  • members - high-level representatives from EU Member States
  • participants – representatives from countries associated to Horizon Europe or subsequent research framework programmes
