Matthias Weitzel is a project officer working on the economics of climate change.

Biography

Matthias Weitzel contributes to research on the economics of climate change, energy and transport at the JRC in Seville. Since joining the JRC in 2017, he works in providing analysis on energy-climate policies, using the macro-economic model GEM-E3 for policy support.

Matthias studied international economics in Tübingen, Beijing and Seattle, graduating with a diploma from Tübingen University in 2010. He holds a doctorate from the University of Kiel (2014). His PhD thesis focusses on the role of emerging economies such as China and India in international climate policy. During his PhD studies he was a visiting researcher at the Chinese Academy for Social Sciences in Beijing.

From 2010 to 2014, Matthias was a researcher at the Kiel Institute for the World Economy in Germany. Between 2014 and 2017, he was a Project Scientist I with the Integrated Assessment Modeling group at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder, CO, USA. His research focuses on the economics of climate change, in particular mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions.
