Biography
Since 2017, Marco has been working as a consultant analyst at the European Crisis Management Laboratory, providing services to the Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC). He specializes in data analysis and technology within the geospatial domain, covering database management and data mining.

Professional achievements
After his PhD in Geography at the Trieste University (2006) - with different positions in academic research (also in Germany and Austria) - Marco specialised in Geomatics and GIScience. As scientific consultant/technical advisor in the Geospatial domain, he worked with public bodies (spatial planning, land administration) and SMEs, developing interdisciplinary, networking (at international level), organizational and project management skills.
Author of 80+ publications, he served as referee for journals (e.g. Journal of Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering, Proceedings of ICCSA). He was member of the Commission “Cartographic Heritage into the Digital” of International Cartographic Association, of the WG “World Heritage Title for Boundaries and Boundary Marks” of Austrian Society for Surveying and Geoinformation, and of the Scientific Committee of Italian Cartographic Association. Marco was a temporary lecturer in geography and cartography matters at Bachelor, Master and doctoral level. He received two international grants for visiting lectureship periods in Germany (LMU, 2011; Tübingen University, 2014).
Academic background
Marco completed his Master’s Degree in Political Science and Government at Milano University from 1995 to 2001. His major fields of study included Political and Economic Geography, Border Studies, and International Relations. His thesis focused on cross-border cooperation and the center-periphery model, examining the case of Regio Insubrica (IT-CH) with INTERREG as a case study.
From 2003 to 2006, Marco pursued his PhD in Geographic Information Science and Cartography at Trieste University. His dissertation centered on land cover analysis through remote sensing and automated classification procedures in the cross-border region of Gorizia-Nova Gorica (1992-2003), with scholarship funding from INTERREG. Additionally, he conducted research on the detection of fluvial landscape changes along the Isonzo River, focusing on landscape ecology.
