The JRC hosted EU Reference Laboratory for Alternatives to Animal Testing (EURL ECVAM) has published its Status Report 2017 presenting an update on the development, validation and regulatory acceptance of alternative methods to animal testing.

The report describes all the activities that EURL ECVAM has undertaken since the publication of the previous report (November 2016) to advance the Three Rs (Replacement, Reduction and Refinement of animal procedures) in collaboration with many other committed organisations.

Among the topics featured in the report, the reader can find information on research and development projects, test method submissions, validation studies, peer reviews, EURL ECVAM recommendations, test guidelines and guidance documents, and a range of initiatives to share information on alternatives and promote their acceptance and use across the globe.

The mandate of EURL ECVAM is described in Directive 2010/63/EU on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes and includes a number of duties (Article 48 and Annex VII) to advance the Three Rs. The current activities of EURL ECVAM build on over 25 years of JRC work on alternatives and include participation in research projects, coordination and undertaking of validation studies, dissemination and sharing of information, and the promotion of dialogue towards the international acceptance and uptake of alternative methods and approaches.

The report is a valuable resource for anyone interested in being informed about the activities of EURL ECVAM to implement the Three 3s in fields where animals are used for scientific purposes.
