The European Commission has released its 2024 Annual Economic Report on the European Union fishing fleet, which reveals a substantial improvement in the sector's economic performance. Gross profits have increased from €1,254 million in 2022 to €1,364 million in 2023 and are projected to reach €1,673 million in 2024.

Economists of the Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) contributed to this comprehensive report, which highlights several factors that contributed to the improved performance, including lower fuel prices, progress in achieving sustainable stocks, higher average first-sale prices for some key species and a reduction in fishing capacity.

Produced by experts from the Scientific, Technical and Economic Committee for Fisheries (STECF), including from the Commission and EU Member States, the report provides valuable data, trends and analyses that are used for policymaking at the Commission’s and national levels, and are beneficial to stakeholders, including advisory councils and NGOs.

The report supports impact assessments on fisheries policies and socio-economic assessments, and provides scientific advice for the common fisheries policy. It includes:

  • a structural and economic overview of the EU fishing fleet in 2022, trend analyses for the years 2013-2022, and where possible projections for 2023 and 2024;
  • a regional analysis of the EU fishing fleet by major sea basin, as well as, fleets operating in the EU outermost regions and in other fishing regions;
  • a detailed structural and economic overview of each EU country fishing fleet, including qualitative economic performance assessments for 2022 and projections for 2023 and 2024.
