The findings were contrasted with long-term developments in the EU and other countries. Results from two recent Special Eurobarometer surveys show that perceptions about fairness and equality of opportunities have decreased substantially between 2017 and 2022 in the EU. Fairness perceptions diminished among young people, but less so among lower-educated individuals and those with financial difficulties. However, EU citizens are not more concerned about income inequality compared to 5 years ago nor there is an increased belief that the government should take further measures to reduce income inequality. The seminar analysed possible drivers of the findings and discussed the links between fairness views, inequality concerns and preferences for redistributive policies. Moreover, it addressed the potential implications for redistributive and equality of opportunity policies.
