CAS 3rd Annual Workshop

The 3rd annual workshop of the JRC - Centre for Advanced Studies (CAS) promises to be an interesting, lively and inter-disciplinary event, showcasing JRC projects ranging from Artificial Intelligence to micro-plastics; and big data to social inequality. It will take place online via Webex.

Objectives of the workshop

This year’s CAS workshop focuses on the contribution of the CAS to three important Commission priorities: 'A Europe fit for the digital age'; 'An economy that works for the people'; and 'A European Green Deal'.

The CAS projects are:

• Big data for forecasting economic developments (bigNOMICS);
• Machine intelligence and human behavior (HUMAINT);
• Digital transformation and the governance of human society (DigiTranScope);
• Paradigm shift in communication;
• Towards a technological platform for nanoplastics detection (NANOPLASTICS);
• Computational Social Science for Policy (CSS4P);
• Social classes in the digital age (DIGCLASS).

During the workshop, scientists working on the CAS projects will present their work, with the mature and outgoing projects given time to detail and discuss their results while the newer projects lay out their objectives and research plans, allowing participants to contribute early on in the shaping of the science questions.

With a diverse programme including a roadshow, presentations, ePoster sessions, panel discussions and Q/A sessions, participants are informed about the ongoing research and invited to engage with the teams on either research or policy questions.

What is CAS?

The Centre for Advanced Studies (CAS), established in 2016, aims to provide a stimulating, trans- disciplinary platform where the JRC can work together with external scientists to explore the nature of newly emerging scientific and societal issues with the potential of high impact for EU citizens and beyond.

The research of the CAS projects contributes to the JRC's knowledge base and enables the JRC to elaborate on policy options and their impact well ahead of time. Deliberately chosen without a thematic focus, CAS projects contribute to various Commission priorities, and they enable cross-silo thinking and exchange, thus reflecting on the complexity of the challenges Europe is facing.
