• Late January 2026

Long term drought conditions over Europe remained stable in late January. At the same time a recent meteorological drought developed quickly over large regions in central and north-eastern Europe.  Temperatures were close to average.

Alert drought conditions

Alert conditions persisted in the Iberian Peninsula, in south-eastern Türkiye, in northern Africa, and in small areas in Cyprus, Sicily, Sardinia, and north-western France. In some regions, below-expected vegetation may be attributed also to changes in land and agricultural management strategies, to former severe and persistent drought conditions, and/or to over wet conditions. 

Warning drought conditions

Warning drought conditions persist in north-western France, Belgium, the southern part of the Netherlands, and in the northern UK. Smaller regions in south-eastern Europe, Italy, Spain, and central Germany remained affected. Conditions continued to improve across central-eastern Europe.   

Due to known issues currently under investigation that affect the estimated soil moisture, the CDI map may be less reliable in some regions, particularly western Russia. Users may consult the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI), available at the European Drought Observatory (EDO).

Watch drought conditions emerged in central and north-eastern Europe. 

Normal or recovery drought conditions

Recovery conditions are visible in north-eastern Italy, Türkiye, and in some regions in Russia. Large areas in Europe are under normal conditions.

There are issues affecting the accuracy of the hydrological model output in the easternmost part of the domain, especially over western Russia. As a result, the Soil Moisture Index Anomaly, the derived Combined Drought Indicator (CDI) and the Low-Flow Index (LFI) should be interpreted with caution since mid-May 2025. We are working to resolve these issues and will provide updates as soon as possible.  

• Mid January 2026

Drought conditions over Europe improved in mid-January. Over large regions in central and eastern Europe and in Türkiye recent meteorological drought rapidly recovered as well as longer droughts over eastern Europe. 

Besides a few short and mild warm spells in France, central-western Alps, Italy and Pyrenees, temperatures were close to the average.

Alert drought conditions

Alert conditions persisted in the Iberian Peninsula, in south-eastern Türkiye, in northern Africa, and in small areas in Cyprus, Sicily and Sardinia, persisting from the previous period. Western France started registering alert conditions. In some regions, below-expected vegetation may be attributed also to changes in land and agricultural management strategies, to former severe and persistent drought conditions and/or to over wet conditions. 

Warning drought conditions

Warning drought conditions persist in north-western France, Belgium, the southern part of the Netherlands, and in the UK. Smaller areas affected remain in south-eastern Europe, Italy, Spain, and central Germany. 

Conditions have improved in central-eastern Europe. Previously affected areas have been reduced in the north-western Balkans and Hungary, while south-eastern Poland has recovered. A relevant reduction in warning conditions is also observed in Türkiye.  

Due to known issues currently under investigation that affect the estimated soil moisture, the CDI map may be less reliable in some regions, particularly western Russia. • Early January 2026

Drought conditions over Europe remained generally stable or showed signs of improvement in the first tan days of January. Over large regions in central Europe, Italy, and eastern Europe recent meteorological drought rapidly recovered. 

Temperatures were close to average, with only a few short warm spells moving from central Mediterranean to south-eastern Europe.

Alert conditions persisted in the Iberian Peninsula, in south-eastern Türkiye, in northern Africa, and in several Mediterranean islands.

In Cyprus signs of vegetation recovery appeared in the eastern part of the island.

• Early December 2025

Drought conditions over Europe remained generally stable or showed signs of improvement in the first ten days of December.

Notably, Croatia and Hungary experienced a slight reduction from the previous alert and warning level, indicating a recovery from previous drought conditions. Also in the UK an evolution from warning to recovery or normal conditions occurred. The Iberian Peninsula saw a slow improvement trend even if vegetation stress kept at an alert level. This stability may have been caused by the cumulative impact of previous persistent droughts. 

Elsewhere in Europe, drought conditions remained the same as they were by late November. 

Temperatures in early December were initially close to average, with only a few short warm spells in north-eastern Europe, then evolved towards a constantly increasing and enlarging warm spell over central Europe.

Warning drought conditions

Warning drought conditions remained in large areas of south-eastern Europe and the Mediterranean, over north-western and southern France, some areas in Italy, the UK (with a slight reduction), the southern part of the Netherlands, Belgium, some small areas in central Germany, south-eastern Poland, Slovakia, north-western Balkans, and Hungary. Due to known issues (under investigation, currently affecting the estimated soil moisture), the CDI map may exaggerate the situation in some regions, such as western Russia.

• Ukraine and Romania have experienced a reduction from the previous alert level, recovering from previous drought conditions. The Iberian Peninsula has seen a slow improvement trend even if vegetation stress kept at an alert level. This may be caused by the cumulative impact of previous persistent droughts. Elsewhere in Europe, drought conditions remained the same as they were by mid November.
• During this period temperatures were above the average, with eastern Europe experiencing short warm spells. In rest of Europe temperatures were close to the average.

While meteorological drought has reduced and partially recovered, hydrological drought conditions has remained at a warning level, and vegetation stress has persisted at an alert level. This stability may be attributed to the cumulative impact of previous persistent droughts.
• Elsewhere in Europe, drought conditions remain mostly unchanged from the previous report.  
• Temperatures in mid-November were generally close to average, with only short warm spells in central and eastern Europe.

• Between 1 to 10 November, drought conditions over Europe are generally stable. A slow and slight recovery is visible in northern and central Europe, particularly in the Benelux regions where the alert class is reduced.

• In the Iberian Peninsula the evolution is more complex, due to recent precipitation events. While meteorological drought persists in some regions, it reduces and partially recovers in others. Hydrological drought conditions (warning class) also improved in some areas. Nevertheless, alert class conditions have increased in other areas, possibly due to the cumulative impact of previous persistent droughts. 

• In the rest of Europe, drought conditions remained mostly unchanged from the previous report.  

• Temperatures in early November were generally close to average, with only a short warm spell in northern Europe. 

• Alert drought conditions

• Alert conditions get worse in the western Iberian Peninsula, while get better in Belgium, central-eastern Ukraine, and northern Türkiye. Alert conditions remained stable in the Netherlands, Hungary, north-western Romania, north-eastern Croatia, the south-eastern Balkans, and Moldova. In some regions, below-expected vegetation activity may be also attributed to changes in land and agricultural management strategies or to former severe and persistent drought conditions.

Between 21 to 31 October, drought conditions recovered in some areas of south-eastern and north-eastern Europe, as well as of the Iberian Peninsula, due to recent precipitation events. However, meteorological drought persists in some regions of the Iberian Peninsula.

In the rest of Europe, conditions remained mostly unchanged from the previous report.  

Temperatures in late October were generally close to average, with only a short warm spell in the southern part of the Iberian Peninsula.

• Mid-October

Between 11 to 20 October, drought conditions in some areas of south-eastern Europe recovered due to recent precipitation events, while warnings remain in all other areas.

In contrast, a precipitation deficit in the Iberian Peninsula worsened the conditions of the meteorological drought. In the rest of Europe conditions remained mostly unchanged from the previous report at the end of September.  

Temperatures during mid-October were close to average.

Alert conditions persist in the north-western part of the Iberian Peninsula, the Benelux countries, the Pannonian Plain in Hungary, the central Balkans, Moldova, central-eastern Ukraine, and northern Türkiye. From 1 to 10 October, drought conditions in Europe remained unchanged from the previous report at the end of September.

The Iberian Peninsula continued to experience a lack of precipitation, maintaining meteorological drought conditions in the region. The UK, Ireland, France, the north-western Iberian Peninsula, southern Ukraine, Benelux, and large parts of south-eastern Europe - from Hungary to the Black Sea, including most of Türkiye - continued to face drought conditions with different severity levels during this period. Early October temperatures were close to average in Europe. 

Alert drought conditions

Alert conditions persist in south-western France, the northern Iberian Peninsula, the Pannonian Plain in Hungary, the central Balkans (Serbia, Bulgaria, south and western Romania), Moldova, southern Ukraine, and northern Türkiye. In some regions, below-expected vegetation activity and consequent reduced crop yields may be also attributed to changes in agricultural management strategies. 

Warning drought conditions

Warning drought conditions are confirmed in most of north-western France, the southwest of the Netherlands, Belgium, some areas in Germany and Czechia, eastern UK, south Ireland, south-eastern Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Türkiye, south-eastern Italy and large areas of the Balkan peninsula. Due to known issues (under investigation) currently affecting the estimated soil moisture, the CDI map may exaggerate the situation in some regions, such as western Russia.

However, severe, enduring, and critical conditions persist in the Mediterranean, Balkans and the Black Sea region. The Iberian Peninsula is experiencing critical conditions, with extreme impacts resulting from prolonged drought followed by intense precipitation.  

This analysis refers to a period including the recent floods in the Valencia region in Spain, which occurred at the end of October. The impact of these floods could be already visible in the data, overlapping with the prolonged drought impacts. The relationship between the recent floods and the preceding drought is complex. Drought can lead to soil sealing, where rainfall struggles to penetrate well in the soil after a dry period. Further research will reveal whether this phenomenon worsened the situation in Eastern Spain. 

The spatial extent of the drought is slowly reducing in southern and eastern Europe thanks to normal precipitation.

In most of Scandinavia, the UK, Ireland, most of the Iberian Peninsula, most of France, the Netherlands, Germany, most of Poland, Austria, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, Ukraine, Lithuania, Belarus, the Balkans, most of Türkiye, and northern Greece scattered warning conditions were decreasing and mostly theere were recovery or normal conditions.

Some regions of northern Scandinavia experienced meteorological drought, as reflected by the CDI that indicated watch conditions due to lack of precipitation.

Some areas in the Mediterranean, particularly southern Italy and southern Spain, were under “alert” conditions, with vegetation affected by the drought. This phenomenon is much more severe and prolonged in Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia, where the situation is serious, leading to water rationing and dried up reservoirs. To alleviate the situation, the Moroccan government is accelerating projects to desalinate seawater.

During this period, temperatures have been above the seasonal average for the entire Europe, with short warm spells in the Alps and northern Scandinavia. In the Alps, the snowpack is lower than usual, even if snow is expected for February.

The map displays very stable conditions for drought in Europe: bad and potentially critical conditions for most of the Mediterranean regions, while almost no drought across most of the rest of Europe in mid-January with respect to drought hazard.

Eastern Europe is continuing some progressive recovering, while northern Scandinavia is experiencing initial meteorological drought.
