Current drought situation in Europe

The latest status of drought in Europe using a combined drought indicator.

Detailed analysis of drought conditions

In mid-October 2025, according to the Combined Drought Indicator (CDI):

Alert drought conditions

Alert conditions persist in the north-western part of the Iberian Peninsula, the Benelux countries, the Pannonian Plain in Hungary, the central Balkans, Moldova, central-eastern Ukraine, and northern Türkiye. In some regions, below-expected vegetation activity, may be also attributed to changes in land and agricultural management strategies.

Warning drought conditions

Warning drought conditions still remain in large areas of south-eastern Europea and the Mediterranean. Similar conditions are estimated over north-western France, the southwest part of the Netherlands, Belgium, some areas in central Germany and Czechia, the eastern UK, south Ireland, south-eastern Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary Due to known issues (under investigation, currently affecting the estimated soil moisture), the CDI map may exaggerate the situation in some regions, such as western Russia.

Users can additionally evaluate both the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) available on the European Drought Observatory (EDO) portal.

Watch drought conditions

Watch drought conditions worsened in the Iberian Peninsula.

Normal or recovery drought conditions

Recovery conditions are emerging in some areas of the Balkans as well as in Ireland, and western Türkiye. Large areas in Europe are under normal conditions.

Note: this analysis was performed on 30-10-2025, based on data of mid-October 2025, and computed with version 4.0 of the Combined Drought Indicator.

There are issues affecting the accuracy of the hydrological model outputs in parts of domain, specifically in Poland, where source data are not reliable, and east of Poland, where the model tends to be too dry. As a result, the Low-Flow Index (LFI), Soil Moisture Index Anomaly and Combined Drought Indicator (CDI) data should be interpreted with caution since mid-May 2025, especially in Poland and east of Poland. We are working to resolve the issue and will provide updates as soon as possible.

Past drought situation in Europe

You can find below the past situation of droughts in Europe.

Please note that the white areas on the maps labelled as "no data" should be interpreted as "no drought or recovery".
