ICT sector analysis 2016

The JRC study "Prospective Insights in ICT R&D" (PREDICT) focuses on analysing the supply of Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) and Research and Development (R&D) in ICT in Europe, with comparison to major competitors worldwide. ICTs are indeed the technologies underpinning the digital economy.

This research entails:

  • ICT R&D analysis: providing data on private & public ICT R&D expenditures (EU+competitors)
  • ICT industry analysis
  • the measurement of the digitisation of the economy, across all sectors.

The research provides the evidence needed to analyse strengths and weaknesses of the European ICT industry in comparison with that of its most important trading partners, over a range of several years and to a significant level of details.

The PREDICT dataset and its accompanying reports provide a permanent monitoring tool of ICT sector. Since 2006, they serve to monitor and assess the impact of related policies: the 3% R&D (Lisbon Agenda and EU2020), the Digital Agenda for Europe (Chapter 5), the Member States ICT supply side and R&D efforts in the European Semester (European Digital Progress Report) and more generally in the Digital Single Market.
