On 13 May 2019, Commissioner Tibor Navracsics is participating in the Hungarian edition of the Science meets Parliaments/Science meets Regions project, taking place in Balatonfüred.
Tibor Navracsics, Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport, responsible for the Joint Research Centre, said: "The European Commission is promoting evidence based policymaking where EU policies are actually implemented: on the ground, in EU member states, in our regions and cities. Today's meeting is a case in point. Large lakes like the Balaton require tailor-made solutions that can only be implemented locally, by authorities and other stakeholders. With this event we would like to encourage authorities managing large lakes in different parts of Europe to share information and work together so that they can benefit from the latest science and learn from each other."
The event, organised by the Lake Balaton Development, focuses on sustainable regional development and water management, as well as the governance of lake regions in Europe in general.
It addresses locally relevant issues and locally engineered solutions, while also calling for a European approach to the multiregional governance of lakes and taking into consideration the specificities of lakes as opposed to river basins.
Around 100 participants, including representatives of the local authorities, Hungarian and European policymakers and scientists, and representatives of the public are attending the event.
It is the 12th in a series of 26 events organised in the framework of the Science meets Parliaments/Science meets Regions project.

Science meets Parliaments/Science meets Regions project
The Pilot Project "Science meets Parliaments/Science meets Regions", proposed by the European Parliament and implemented throughout 2019 by the JRC in close consultation with the Committee of the Regions, has its roots in the annual flagship event that the JRC has been holding in the European Parliament in Brussels since 2015.
Its objective is to spread a culture of evidence-informed policymaking throughout EU Member States, regions and cities, and to increase citizens' trust in science by showing what contribution it can make to their everyday lives.
The organising regions or cities select a topic of particular concern to them and bring around the discussion table scientists, policymakers and civil society.
The JRC supports the organisers with its expertise in a given topic.
The Water Framework Directive
The Water Framework Directive sets the scene for water management in Europe.
The main aim is to ensure that all rivers and lakes are clean and healthy. Lake Balaton is a unique natural environment that presents multiple opportunities for development.
But there are numerous challenges, as the lake is also a precious biodiversity hub and its economic development has to be managed in such a way that it does not endanger the local ecosystem.
