The JRC's Cancer Information team and the Steering Committee of the European Network of Cancer Registries (ENCR) organised a Scientific Symposium on 19 October 2017, immediately after the Annual Conference of the International Association of Cancer Registries (IACR) in Utrecht (NL).

The event represented a unique chance for participants from cancer registries to discuss challenges, share experiences and agree priorities with the newly elected ENCR Steering Committee and the JRC.

Most importantly, during the Symposium a pilot version of the European Cancer Information System (ECIS) application was launched.

This is a web-based tool developed by the JRC to report and disseminate cancer burden indicators at European level, namely on cancer incidence, mortality, and prevalence. It represents a milestone achievement for the JRC and the ENCR in realising its vision to have one European Cancer Information System (ECIS) to assess and monitor the magnitude of cancer burden, to follow trends and changes over time and to use this information for political decision making as well as epidemiological research.

For now, the ECIS web-application is released to the 160 cancer registries community to collect their feedback as data providers before its final release – this is an all-inclusive approach. The public release is planned for January 2018, by which time the ECIS, in addition to the indicators computed on the registry data, will also be populated with 2018 predictions for cancer incidence and mortality.
