New technologies will transform living in cities - the future of cities

New technologies will transform how people move, live, work, and interact with authorities within cities.

These technologies will need to be interoperable, integrated, and implemented in an inclusive way to benefit the functioning of cities.

Shared, automated vehicles and multi-modal mobility will help complement public transport in cities. This could reduce some of the 250 million personal cars in the EU.

New work patterns such as teleworking could reduce commuting.

Automation, drone-deliveries and artificial intelligence (AI) could decrease shopping trips and other demand for transport.

Increasing use of technologies such as big data, sensors, cameras, cloud computing, and AI will improve city services.

These technologies should be inclusive and respect privacy laws.
