The summer school on Nuclear Decommissioning and Waste Management (DSS) offers insights to the promising field of nuclear decommissioning and related activities, like waste management and radiation protection.The DSS is organised within the frame of the European Learning Initiatives for Nuclear Decommissioning and Environmental Remediation (ELINDER).ScopeThrough classroom training, visits to the JRC-Ispra nuclear facilities and case studies, the students are introduced to the following subjects:International status of the play in nuclear decommissioningRadioactivity and radiation protection fundamentalsDecommissioning planning processTechnological aspects of characterisation, decontamination, dismantling and site releaseManagement of the radioactive wasteSocietal aspects of decommissioningThe DSS is concluded with a “job fair” that gives the chance to students to meet representatives of European industrial companies working in decommissioning.Course organisationThe DSS is a 5-days learning path. It is organised annually, during the summer break of most higher-educational institutions. It takes place at the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission in Ispra, Italy.Students who wish to obtain a course certificate are welcome to sit an optional final test.OrganisersThe school is jointly organised by the JRC.Who can applyMSc and PhD students, preferably in engineering, science or technology.Admitted students should have completed their first cycle of studies by the starting date of the DSS.Language of the courseEnglishFees and chargesThe school is provided free of charge to university students (eventual travelling costs not included).
