Towards a Technological Platform for NANOPLASTICS Detection (NANOPLASTICS)

Micro(nano)plastics are increasingly being found throughout the environment, posing a clear and present risk to nature and human health through the infiltration and contamination of air, water and land.

Without adequate means of detecting small (typically <5-10 µm) micro and nanoplastic material, the harmful effects of nanoplastics cannot properly be assessed.

This project will assemble a dedicated multidisciplinary research team of external experts and JRC researchers to develop novel, cost-effective methods and strategies for the widespread detection and environmental monitoring of nanoplastic pollution using analytical, biological and biotechnological approaches.

This better understanding will allow policy makers to define appropriate actions to safeguard both environmental and human health.
