Overview
Transport is a key driver of economic growth and quality of life, but its environmental, economic and social externalities underscore the need for sustainable innovation.
A growing consensus points to an innovation revolution that could fundamentally reshape the transport sector. To support this transformation, the JRC launched TRIMIS in 2017 as an integrated, modular and open-access tool supporting policymaking, information provision and knowledge management.

What the JRC is doing
The JRC supports EU transport and mobility initiatives in promoting a sustainable, connected and competitive European transport system and, through TRIMIS, exemplifies the European Commission’s commitment to open science.
The JRC also supports stakeholder engagement and the promotion of EU-funded transport research and innovation projects. It also consistently contributes to public events and discussions related to transport research and innovation with prominent European research institutions.
About TRIMIS
TRIMIS enables a comprehensive view of the transport landscape by compiling data on emerging and disruptive technologies, associated funding streams and relevant policy measures.
This facilitates the monitoring, evaluation and steering of the anticipated transformation in the transport sector: it helps decision-makers identify promising pathways, allocate resources efficiently and design coherent strategies.
Consequently, TRIMIS plays a pivotal role in ensuring that the envisioned transport revolution advances in line with broader sustainability objectives and societal expectations. It also supports cross-border collaboration among researchers, industry and regional European authorities.
TRIMIS is carried out by the JRC under the supervision of the Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport (DG MOVE), with the support of the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation (DG RTD). It was launched in 2017 and has since expanded and evolved in terms of content and functionalities.
Policy background
JRC’s work on transport research and innovation supports a multitude of policy initiatives and harmonisation processes at the EU and global level.
In particular, it supports the following regulations:
