Overview
Digitalisation is transforming energy systems as electricity grids integrate smart technologies, data, and artificial intelligence.
The JRC supports the EU’s energy digitalisation agenda by assessing smart grids, interoperability, system development, and electric vehicle integration. It evaluates how digital tools enhance efficiency, reliability, and sustainability, while addressing emerging risks and strengthening system resilience.
Code of Conduct for energy smart appliances
The JRC contributes to the development of a Code of Conduct led by the Commission’s Directorate-General for Energy to ensure interoperability of smart appliances within households.
The initiative defines common requirements for connected devices and is being expanded to include energy management systems, EV charging equipment, photovoltaic inverters, and batteries.
Governance of energy–digital interdependencies
The JRC assesses the growing interdependencies between digital technologies and energy systems, developing models and approaches to support effective governance and secure system operation.
Digital power system modelling
Through its Smart Grid Interoperability Laboratory (SGIL), the JRC develops advanced modelling and real-time simulation tools for digitalised electricity systems, including hardware-in-the-loop testing and collaborative 'internet-of-labs' infrastructures.
It is also advancing digital twins of the electricity grid to enable adaptive, data-driven system management.

AI solutions for the future energy system
The JRC applies artificial intelligence and machine learning to improve the planning and operation of energy systems, including demand forecasting, renewable integration, and energy community analysis.
It develops accessible tools, such as web-based platforms, and tests innovative solutions for smart EV charging and grid services, contributing to more flexible, resilient, and sustainable power systems.
