Nuclear accident modelling

The JRC has a strong expertise on nuclear accident modelling, hence it created in 2012 the Nuclear Reactor Accident Analysis and Modelling (NURAM) team to reinforce research and collaboration in the field of Severe Accidents for Nuclear Power Plants...

Since the 90s, the JRC has participated in many experimental and analytical activities in the field of Severe Accidents for Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs). Several experimental facilities were operating during many years within JRC premises (FARO, KROTOS, STORM) in Ispra. Since the beginning of the PHEBUS FP project in 1988, the JRC was involved in the management, the financing and scientific cooperation in the Phebus FP programme. JRC staff was also very actively participating to the Euratom FP6 SARNET and FP7 SARNETII projects.

Following the Fukushima Daiichi accident, it has become more important to further reinforce safety in the EU and in particular accident analysis and management for NPPs as well as emergency preparedness of the Member States.

Given its role in the Framework Programme of the European Atomic Energy Community for nuclear research and training activities, the JRC created in 2012 a team with strong expertise on nuclear accident modelling - the Nuclear Reactor Accident Analysis and Modelling (NURAM) team.Located in Petten (NL), NURAM team will sustain JRC contribution to the European post-Fukushima efforts needed to update the Severe Accident Management strategies and practices.

The work of the NURAM team mainly concentrates on support to the development and validation of the Reference European codedeveloped by IRSN (Institut de Radioprotection et Surete Nucleaire – France) and GRS (Gesellschaft für Anlagen- und Reaktorsicherheit – Germany) for Severe Accident Analyses and Source Term evaluation on Light Water Reactors (LWRs): ASTEC (Accident Source Term Evaluation Code).
