Marine Biodiversity

The JRC provides scientific and technical support to the implementation of EU policies related to marine biodiversity

Marine ecosystems are under pressure from human activities, threatening marine species and habitats. The protection and conservation of marine biodiversity is a crucial element to improve the environmental status of marine and coastal ecosystems and secure the health and ecosystem services of our seas for the future.

The EU has a well-established, holistic policy framework aimed at protecting and conserving (marine) biodiversity, including the Birds and Habitats Directives, the Water Framework Directive, the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, as well as the Biodiversity Strategy for 2030.

The JRC provides scientific and technical support to the implementation and alignment of the different of EU policies related to marine biodiversity. JRC activities include:

  • Providing support to the Marine Strategy Framework Directive implementation and development
  • Developing marine biodiversity modelling tools to simulate and address policy needs
  • Developing guidance and recommendations for a more harmonised marine biodiversity monitoring across the EU and beyond
  • Providing guidance, recommendations, and mechanisms facilitating transnational collaboration on alien species, including marine, through the European Alien Species Information Network (EASIN)
