In the event of a radiological or nuclear accident where there are releases to the atmosphere or aquatic environment, it is important to rapidly and accurately interpret and evaluate the consequences of the results being measured. The EU information exchange systems will be linked with tools to model the consequences of the levels of radioactivity in the environment for the population.
For this new JRC development in emergency preparedness, the first step is the estimation of the potential agricultural consequences after an accident on a European scale. To this end, use will be made of the agricultural produce as well as the radiation information collected from the information exchange systems and relevant supportive information available from other JRC databases. The evaluated information is important to make a rapid economic analysis of the situation, on the basis of the expected or measured levels of ground deposition. It may also be important to quickly update the information on the basis of new tele-observations.
The combination of the expertise at the JRC on emergency information exchange, atmospheric forecast, radioactivity monitoring and agricultural impact analysis makes it a key actor in providing support to the decision making process, important for other Commission services. In a wider context, the provided estimations can also be a used to analyse the impact of underlying monitoring data gathering networks and make recommendations for improving them.
