Composite indicators

The JRC is renowned for its expertise on statistical methodologies and technical guidelines for the sensible development and responsible use of composite indicators and scoreboards.

Supporting policies with Composite Indicators and Scoreboards

Composite indicators aggregate multi-dimensional processes into simplified concepts. The JRC has developed statistical methodologies and tools to construct robust composite indicators and 'smart' scoreboards that can provide policy-makers with the ‘big picture’ on matters that are crucial for the EU, helping to shape interventions and monitor progress in a wide range of policy areas.

Such areas include:

  • Innovation
  • Environmental pressures
  • Education
  • Competitiveness
  • Sustainable connectivity
  • Inequalities

Good policies start with good measurement.

Competence Centre on Composite Indicators and Scoreboards

The Competence Centre on Composite Indicators and Scoreboards (CC-COIN) was launched in 2016 to support policy Directorates-General and EU institutions - as well as international organisations and world class universities - in the co-creation of sound and robust monitoring and data visualisation frameworks, which can be used to provide evidence-based assessments of EU policies.

For more information about the ongoing policy support work, capacity building and research activities carried out at the Competence Centre on Composite Indicators and Scoreboards, you can visit the dedicated space in the JRC Knowledge for Policy platform.
