Gadolinium has a large capture cross section in the thermal energy region. Therefore, it is often used as a burnable neutron absorber in nuclear reactors to compensate for the excess of reactivity or also as an emergency shutdown absorber in CANDU reactors. The Gd-thermal project aims to perform total and capture cross sections measurements for neutron interactions with 155Gd and 157Gd in the thermal energy region.
