Overview
The JRC monitors and assesses the security of energy supply in Europe, focusing on gas and electricity systems, to support EU policy for the green and digital transition. This includes support for REPowerEU, the EU's strategic plan to enhance energy security across EU countries and phase out fossil fuel imports from Russia.
This is part of our work to support a reliable, affordable and secure energy system through integrated analysis of energy security, infrastructure development and market design.
Energy security tools and models
The JRC develops key models and tools to enhance system resilience and risk preparedness, while addressing the integration of decarbonised gases such as hydrogen.
Security of EU Gas Supply dashboard
We develop and maintain the Security of EU Gas Supply dashboard, which provides comprehensive weekly data on gas flows by pipeline, liquefied natural gas (LNG), storage and consumption, enabling timely tracking of supply trends.
European Energy Storage Inventory
The European Energy Storage Inventory offers a real-time overview of storage projects across Europe, covering mechanical, electrochemical, chemical, and thermal technologies through an interactive dashboard and map.
The JRC also contributes to electricity risk preparedness and the protection of critical energy infrastructures, developing methodologies and conducting exercises to strengthen system security. Through these activities, we support a resilient, secure, and well-functioning energy system while addressing the challenges of the clean energy transition.
