Digital ecosystem analysis: DGTES 2022

The Digital Techno-Economic ecoSystem (DGTES) is the application of the Techno-Economic ecoSystem (TES) analytical approach, developed by the Joint Research Centre (JRC), to the analysis of the digital ecosystem.

DGTES:

  • allows to target complex technology-based dynamic segments by means of an ecosystem-by-design approach
  • represents an adequate methodology to describe and analyse the features and functions of the digital ecosystem
  • allows mapping the digital ecosystem through a) the detection of players and activities that engage in a set of selected digital technologies, b) the identification of the interlinkages and relations resulting from shared activities, locations and technological fields
  • defines the boundaries of the analysed digital ecosystem in terms of main technological subdomains (digital areas)
  • drawing a web of interlinkages and connections across players, it tracks explicit collaborations and can reveal knowledge flows within the digital ecosystem, keeping a geographical (worldwide, EU, regional) and technological (digital areas) perspective and bringing the analysis at the requested level of granularity (from aggregated to micro data)
  • contributes to a better comprehension of the digital ecosystem in Europe and worldwide, at regional as well as at country and local level, providing a compelling characterisation of its key features and structure

By applying the TES methodology, the DGTES digital ecosystem database can be generated to map the digital ecosystem. The DGTES database reflects the complex structure of this ecosystem, as it contains detailed information on the participation of each player in the detected activities and on their features - such as geographical location and date - over the period 2009-2022.

The first step to build this database is setting the technological boundaries of what will be considered as belonging to the targeted ecosystem. Following the TES approach, DGTES uses a comprehensive dictionary of keywords, built for the specific domain of digital technologies, to search through different sources of factual data, and to identify players, activities and their networks of connections and interlinkages.
