Biography
Péter Benczúr is a scientific officer at the European Commission’s Joint Research Center in Ispra, Italy, where he coordinates the transversal work aimed at “Building a scientific narrative towards a more resilient EU society”. He was one of the developers of the conceptual framework of resilience and the resilience dashboards, which are the main building blocks of the project and were used in the Commission’s work on strategic foresight. He was involved in the research looking at the resilience of EU Member States and regions to the financial and economic crisis. He is also a contributor to the Fairness project of the JRC, looking at income inequality at the level of the EU. He studied mathematics at the Lorand Eotvos University in Budapest and obtained a Ph.D in Economics at MIT in 2001. Previously he was the head of research at MNB, the central bank of Hungary, and an adjunct faculty at Central European University, Budapest.
His research covers both macroeconomic and microeconomic aspects of public policy and academic issues. The macro projects concentrate on the nominal, financial and real convergence of small open economies, sovereign borrowing, and international business cycles. Micro topics include banking, and the impact of taxation and finances on household behaviour. He has also written extensively on the Hungarian tax system, and has edited part of the 2013 Hungarian Labour Market Review, focusing on taxes, transfers and the labour market.
