Biography
Luigi Spagnolo is an IT project assistant. He coordinates the design and development activities around the web portal Epidemic Intelligence from Open Sources (EIOS). Through this project he deals with stakeholders such as the World Health Organization (leader of the initiative), DG HERA (funder and key stakeholder of the project) and ECDC (another important user in the EU).
Luigi also contributes to projects of the European Crisis Monitoring Laboratory (ECML), by carrying out requirement elicitation and analysis, as well as devising cutting-edge IT solutions for data analytics, integration and interoperability across systems.
He has been working at the Joint Research Centre since 2013, initially as external consultant, later (from 2016 to 2020) as contract agent and eventually as IT Project assistant.

Professional achievements
Before the JRC, Luigi worked as R&D software engineer at the Hypermedia Open Centre Laboratory (HOC-Lab) of Politecnico di Milano (Italy; where it was also a Ph.D. candidate) and at the University of Lugano, Switzerland. His work focused mainly on user experiences for data exploration, visual analytics and search, as well as on social web and collaborative applications. Case studies for his research included a portal for the Italian Ministry of cultural heritage and a number of Politecnico di Milano educational initiatives for schools in Italy and Europe.
Academic background
Luigi holds a Ph.D. in Information and Communication Technology from Politecnico di Milano, Italy (obtained in 2013) and a M.Sc. in Computer Engineering from the same university (2008). In 2010-2011, he was a visiting Ph.D. student at the Logical Information Systems lab at IRISA - University of Rennes 1, working on search user interfaces for the semantic web.
