We invite you to discover the latest findings on loneliness in Europe and engage in discussion with the authors of this new book.

The Joint Research Centre of the European Commission has published the book 'Loneliness in Europe – Determinants, Risks and Interventions', addressing the following concerns:

  • What do we know about loneliness in Europe?
  • Why is loneliness not only an individual but also a societal problem?
  • What can we do to address loneliness?

During the launch event the authors will present the main results of the book. Participants will have a chance to tap into the latest cross-national research on loneliness and engage in discussion about future research pathways.

The event will take place online, through the webex link available below. No registration is required.

About loneliness in the EU

Loneliness, often referred to as the ‘epidemic of the 21st century’, has emerged as a serious public health concern. For years, a lack of comprehensive European cross-national data hindered a thorough examination of this issue.

In 2022, the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre conducted the inaugural 'EU Loneliness Survey', covering around 30 000 individuals in 27 European nations.
