Ispra Nuclear Safeguards, Security and Standardization Laboratory

Non-destructive analysis techniques are used for the purpose of nuclear safeguards, nuclear security and nuclear decommissioning and waste management.

The laboratory groups all the relevant nuclear experimental facilities on the Ispra site where non-destructive analysis techniques are used for the purpose of nuclear safeguards, nuclear security and nuclear decommissioning and waste management.

It currently consists of four distributed locations within the ESSOR nuclear island (with different licenses, maintenance requirements, nuclear material inventories etc.) which in fact all need to be relocated in the foreseeable future in order not to interfere with the JRC Ispra site operational decommissioning and waste management activities:

  • Pulsed neutron interrogation test assembly (PUNITA);
  • Performance Laboratory (PERLA);
  • Illicit Trafficking Assessment Programme (ITRAP);
  • European Nuclear Security Training Centre (EUSECTRA Ispra).
