The JRC has prepared an update on pasture conditions in Europe, with a particular focus on regions in central and northern EU countries that have experienced exceptionally dry conditions.
The analysis is based on satellite imagery using observations up to 31 July 2018, and compares the results for 2018 with those of the past, since 1999 (the first year of the observations).
The results show that pasture conditions are seriously negatively affected in northern Germany, Denmark, southern Sweden, the Benelux, the United Kingdom and Ireland, where dry and hot conditions since May or June persisted until the end of the analysis period.
In the Baltic countries, Finland and eastern Poland, pasture productivity was particularly negatively impacted in May and June, but rainfall since then has alleviated the effects of water stress.
The next MARS crop monitoring in Europe Bulletin, which will provide updated crop forecasts and pasture analyses, will be issued on 27 August 2018.
