The JRC publishes today a new brief on Dementia prevention in its Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Knowledge Gateway on the occasion of the 31st Alzheimer Europe conference.

The European Commission is committed to improve the mental health of the EU population, identified as one of the priorities by Member States under the Steering Group on Health Promotion, Disease Prevention and Management of non-communicable diseases.

The JRC publishes therefore an overview of dementia prevention in the European Commission’s Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Knowledge Gateway.

Dementia is a heavy burden on our society. By 2030, about 13.4 million people in Europe will be living with a form of dementia. Beyond the suffering it causes to patients and their carers, the estimated economic cost of dementia is over € 250 billion. The Knowledge Gateway provides public health policy makers and citizens with reliable, independent and up-to-date information and data on topics related to the promotion of health and well-being, and the prevention of non-communicable diseases.

On the Knowledge Gateway, there is a specific section dedicated to mental health where the JRC already published two briefs on the prevention of depression and work-related stress. The JRC is are now expanding it with the launch of the new brief on Dementia Prevention.

This new brief comprises data on the prevalence of dementia in the EU and its disease and economic burden on the society. Moreover, it lists various risk factors and determinants of dementia. Finally, it compiles examples of both recommended and implemented policies that address dementia, which can inspire more focused and impactful actions and policies for its prevention.
