The European branch of Westinghouse Electric Company has recently signed a contract with the National Nuclear Energy Generating Company (NNEGC Energoatom) for the supply of VVER-440 nuclear fuel to the Rivne nuclear power plant in Ukraine.

Part of the success of this outcome is due to the efforts the JRC has put into the ESSANUF project (http://www.essanuf.eu/), which was financed by Euratom and coordinated by Westinghouse. Within that project, the TRANSURANUS code managed by the JRC was the main fuel performance tool selected.

The aim of the project is to create greater security of energy supply and contribute to the security of supply of nuclear fuel for Russian-designed pressurized water reactors (VVER) operating in the EU and neighbour Countries by diversification of fuel sources and in full compliance with nuclear safety standards.
