Today the JRC and the Commission’s Directorate-General for Economic and Financial Affairs (DG ECFIN) release a series of timelines showcasing science’s positive impact on major policies – and telling the stories of the people behind the science.
The ‘paper to policy’ stories are available online and will also be displayed at today’s Annual Research Conference 2021. The Conference brings researchers and practitioners together to chart the course for the European economy post COVID-19. The event is being co-hosted by ECFIN and the JRC for the first time.
Stephen Quest, Director-General for the Joint Research Centre, said: “The new ‘paper to policy’ stories highlight the role of science in shaping the policy of the Commission. But these stories do not only put forward the knowledge, the scientific evidence and the experience behind the European Commission policies. They also show the faces, lives and families of the scientists and policy makers working hand in hand to make them successful. Thanks to our scientists and researchers, the Joint Research Centre helps to improve citizen’s lives and to have a positive impact on issues that concern us all, such as climate change, health and access to finance”.
The papers showcase examples of how research helps designing policies, blending into the policy-making process. The four stories include the science behind:
- healthier food products;
- greener cars;
- the end of mobile roaming charges in the EU;
- how better EU finance leads to more jobs.
The stories provide a unique insight into the people behind the science and research that has contributed to making a success of some major EU policy proposals to benefit Europeans: from Real Driving Emissions legislation to limits on trans fatty acids in food.
Annual Research Conference
The Annual Research Conference 2021 focuses on the topic ‘Charting the European economy post COVID 19: unusual times require unconventional policies’.
European policy makers and academic researchers, along with representatives of the European civil society and think tanks will discuss the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Europe and the new challenges emerging in the post-pandemic environment, focusing on the economy and society and on economic policy options.
After the opening remarks by the European Commissioner for Economy, Paolo Gentiloni, and by the European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, Mariya Gabriel, the conference will take place in five parallel sessions.
As well as putting the ‘paper to policy’ stories on display, the Conference also features a Poster Session, hosting researchers from the academic world and from within the Commission.
