The JRC Malta Young Scientist Award enables young Maltese researchers to showcase their work and achievements in an international context. The JRC is looking for Maltese scientists under 35 years of age with expertise in research fields linked to the digital economy, air & climate, water and marine resources, migration & demography, health in society or nanobiotechnology. The winners of each category will be awarded a study trip to the JRC's site in Ispra, Italy.

In order to apply for the JRC Malta Young Scientist Award, applicants must be under 35, residents in Malta, in possession of at least a Master degree at MQF Level 7 and engaged in research for at least three years in the areas described in the call for proposals.

Applications must be submitted electronically to the Malta Council for Science and Technology (MCST) by Friday 28 April 2017 at 5pm (GMT +1).

The winners will be selected by MCST on the basis of a two-phase process involving application screening and an interview. Six scientists – one for each thematic area – will win a study visit to the JRC Ispra site for 2.5 days in May or June 2017. The JRC Award will cover the costs for the flights and accommodation.

The study visit programme will include:

  • A general overview of JRC as the science and knowledge service of the European Commission,
  • A presentation of the visitor's projects to JRC scientists,
  • "Shadowing" of a JRC scientist according to the individual fields of interest,
  • Visits of some of the main JRC laboratories in Ispra.
