A recently published Global Observations of Forest and Land Cover Dynamics (GOFC-GOLD) sourcebook aims to support the efforts of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity to halt biodiversity loss by providing information on data and methods for monitoring relevant Essential Biodiversity Variables (EBVs).

The EBV concept, which was proposed by the Group on Earth Observations - Biodiversity Observation Network (GEO BON), Space Agencies, and the Earth Observation research community at large, aims to support efforts to monitor biodiversity

The sourcebook is treated as a living document, and is planned to be updated regularly with new information. The intention is to share best approaches and find ways to harmonise the existing forest cover and habitat classification systems, and the methods that are used to interpret and process Earth Observation data, without being overly prescriptive. The Sourcebook also presents how remote sensing data can be used jointly with in-situ data and knowledge.

Over 70 authors contributed to the sourcebook. JRC scientist Zoltan Szantoi was part of the core editorial team, carrying out general editorial work and overviewing the "Emerging Approaches" chapter.
