The Kazakhstan and Russia issues of the JRC MARS Bulletin global outlook series were published today.
According to the Bulletin on Kazakhstan, lower-than-usual temperatures and above-average rainfall in northern and eastern parts of the country affected the yields of spring cereals.
In the southern and north-western macro-regions, heatwaves and dry weather conditions reduced spring cereal production. Consequently, our yield forecast for spring wheat and spring barley was slightly revised downwards, but remains close to last year’s levels and above the five-year average. The yield expectations for winter wheat and grain maize also remain above average.
In Russia, extremely high temperatures and inadequate crop water supply have characterised the growing seasons of winter wheat and spring cereals in western regions.
The yield forecasts for winter and spring cereals are well below last year’s yields and close to or below the five-year average. Grain maize suffered from insufficient crop water supply during the flowering stage in most of southern Russia — except for the Central okrug — leading to a country-level yield forecast that is below both the five-year average and last year’s level.
