Positive yield outlook for winter and spring crops in Russia

The June edition of the JRC MARS bulletin – Global outlook for Russiashows positive yield prospects for winter and spring cereals.

Favourable weather conditions around sowing (in autumn), followed by a mild winter, resulted in an increase of the area of winter cereals in Russia, particularly of winter wheat. In spring, favourable conditions continued in most parts of the country, thanks to adequate rainfall and colder-than-usual temperatures. Winter cereals in the Volga, Ural and Central okrugs are delayed in development, but in good condition and expected to achieve high yields. In the Southern and North Caucasian okrugs, a rain deficit combined with hot temperatures in June, is expected to have negatively affected the yield formation in late-sown fields.

Spring cereals were sown under favourable conditions, and benefited from sufficient soil moisture in most of European Russia and in the Ural okrug. In the Siberian okrug, the yield potential of spring crops is expected to be slightly reduced due to persistent rain deficit and high temperatures since end spring.

Due to the positive yield outlook combined with the increased area of winter wheat, overall, a new record-high production of soft wheat is expected.
