The JRC released a new set of certified reference materials (CRMs) for genetically modified maize. These GMO CRMs will enable control laboratories to verify whether food or feed products on the EU market are correctly labelled with respect to the EU authorised maize event Bt-11.
The JRC developed and released this new set of certified reference materials (CRMs) for the quantification of genetically modified Bt11 maize (unique identifier SYN-BTØ11-1).
It is composed of five CRMs, certified for their mass fraction of Bt11 maize with the nominal Bt11 maize concentration levels of 0 %, 0.1 %, 1 %, 10 % and 100 % and intended to be used for the calibration and/or quality control of GMO measurements.
The genetically modified Bt11 maize was developed by Syngenta Crop Protection LLC (North Carolina, US) and contains a gene to confer resistance to the European corn borer (Ostrinia nubilalis) and a gene to provide tolerance to the phosphinothricin (PPT) herbicide, known as glufosinate. ERM-BF412k will replace the previous set of GMO CRMs for Bt11 maize and will enable GMO testing laboratories to continue quantifying Bt11 maize and to implement the EU labelling threshold for food and feed products.
The measurement system for Bt11 maize is established by the CRM and the reference method validated by the European Reference Laboratory for GMO food and feed (EURL-GMFF). Due to the arbitrary nature of the measurement system established by the CRM and the reference method, GMO testing laboratories are advised to start new quality control charts when changing to this new set of CRMs.
