The August edition of the JRC's Anomaly Hotspots of Agricultural Production (ASAP) assessment is now available at:
Anomaly Hotspots of Agricultural Production (ASAP) assessment
Main findings of the August global overview:
- Prolonged dry spells and high temperatures have lowered primera crop production (maize and beans) in the Dry Corridor of Central America and in particular in southern Honduras and northern Nicaragua, as well as in parts of Haiti.
- In East Africa, the main season is progressing well in Ethiopia, Sudan and Eritrea, while in Somalia, Kenya and parts of Uganda, decreased cereal production and low pasture production are causing a rapid increase in the population at risk of hunger.
- In West Africa, rainfall has started with a delay of one month or more in Senegal, Gambia and Mauritania. Intensive rainfall in the last week of August is causing localised floods in various parts of the region, including Senegal, Burkina Faso and Nigeria.
- In parts of Thailand and northern Cambodia, irrigated maize production is expected to be below-average due to exceptionally dry conditions since June.
The next assessment is scheduled for the last week of September 2019.
