Today, the Commission released the Report on Trade and Jobs, a new report that provides a host of statistics on the European jobs connected to European exports. It shows how important trade has become for European jobs, with EU exports currently supporting over 38 million jobs.
The European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) and the Commission's Directorate General for Trade have collaborated to produce a publication that includes valuable statistical information for trade policymakers and researchers.
The report comes to the following main conclusions:
- In 2019, EU exports to the world are more important than ever, supporting 38 million jobs in the EU, meaning that 1 in 5 jobs across the EU depends on EU exports to the world.
- Between 2000 and 2019, EU employment supported by EU exports to the world increased by 16 million jobs, about 75% in two decades.
- Export-related jobs are, on average, 12% better paid than other jobs in the rest of the economy.
- EU exports support over 24 million jobs outside the EU in 2019, thanks to EU firms participating in global supply chains.
The report uses reliable and comparable statistics to understand how global trade flows affect employment in the EU. The two main novelties of this report are the re-estimation of all trade and jobs figures for the EU27 by taking out the United Kingdom and calculating the trade and jobs figures for the year 2019. The results of the analysis are presented in nine categories: by EU Member State, by trading partner, by industry or sector, by skill, by gender, by age, by effect, and in Country factsheets.
A new infographic complements the information presented, allowing for browsing across the results in a user-friendly manner.
