Today the JRC signed an agreement with the French Institut national de l'environnement industriel et des risques (INERIS) to reinforce cooperation in the fields of industrial risks and safety as well as environmental security.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) follows a number of joint activities, projects and scientific publications. Through the MoU, the JRC and INERIS want to reinforce this mutually beneficial cooperation and provide a basis for additional complementary activities and knowledge sharing.
The areas of collaboration will include:
- Sustainable development, including water, marine and land resources, climate change, transport and circular economy
- Responsible innovation, including industrial leadership, digital economy, raw materials, technology innovation in security, chemical and consumer product safety
- Sustainable energy production, including energy storage, efficiency, security and renewables
- Cross-cutting issues such as reference materials, building safety, modelling, indicators, impact evaluation, foresight, behavioural insight, design for policy, text and data mining.
The priorities for 2018 will encompass research areas such as resilience of critical infrastructure to natural and man-made hazards, nanosafety, air quality and energy storage.
In this framework, the JRC and INERIS will collaborate, for instance, on the organisation of a European workshop on nanosafety, the update of the reference documents on best available techniques (BAT) on the management of waste from extractive industries and the quality assurance of statistical tools and models used to study the sources of air pollutants.
The collaboration also foresees the exchange of staff and access to respective research facilities.
