The EU Bioeconomy Monitoring System has recently been updated to include a mapping of its indicators to the European Green Deal priorities and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The European Commission took a big step forward towards the ambitious European Green Deal with the adoption of the Fit for 55 package on 14 July 2021.
For this occasion, the indicators within the EU Bioeconomy Monitoring System dashboards have been mapped to The European Green Deal priorities and the internationally recognised framework of the Sustainable Development Goals.
Rebuilding stronger, greener and more sustainably through the EU bioeconomy
The mapping exercise emphasises the strong support that the EU bioeconomy offers to the European Green Deal as a backbone for sustainable innovative sourcing and uses of biomass including:
- for food purposes;
- the strengthening of ecosystems; and
- the objectives to improve rural income diversity
- hence also contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals.
Indicators, both those published and those under preparation in the EU Bioeconomy Monitoring System, have always been presented within the conceptual framework as associated with a Bioeconomy Strategy Objective. Now they are also mapped to one or many of the Green Deal priorities and SDGs.
The highest number of indicators are associated with the Green Deal priorities
- Mobilising industry for a clean and circular economy,
- From Farm to Fork: designing a fair, healthy and environmentally friendly food system and
- Preserving and restoring ecosystems and biodiversity.
Three new indicators
Further to the mapping exercise, three novel indicators that are based on the work of the JRC have been added to the dashboards:
These indicators were developed under the JRC Biomass Mandate to provide data, models and analyses on EU and global biomass supply and demand and its environmental, social and economic sustainability.
This brings the total number of EU Bioeconomy Monitoring System indicators to 31.
Next steps
The JRC researchers behind the EU Bioeconomy Monitoring System are currently working with Member States’ experts to develop and operationalise a holistic approach to assessing sustainability of the EU Bioeconomy.
Background
The EU Bioeconomy Monitoring System is a JRC-led action of the EU Bioeconomy Strategy.
It provides up-to-date, comprehensive, robust and reliable information to monitor all areas of the EU bioeconomy.
Through its interactive dashboards, decision-makers and stakeholders can track the bioeconomy’s progress towards sustainability in the EU and its Member States.
